Meet The Family
'Meet The Family' is a book composed of a collection of 50 real life stories of members of the
Bolton community, published through the Bolton Multicultural Scheme.
One word for this
book is 'love', this is a must read! I have not picked up a book that I extremely enjoyed or finished for years. I read this book in one week! I am a
junkie for autobiographies and biographies in general so I was addicted from
the very first page and with each turn the hold intensified.
I spend forty minutes
on the train travelling to work which I really hate but this week I loved it. I
could not wait to get on the train and read my book; this was the only place I could not be interrupted. What I loved about this book is the range of the stories aided to
by the diversity of regions, ethnicity, religions and experiences of the
writers. With each chapter you could be transported from Bolton to India,
Pakistan to Iran or from Zimbabwe to Uganda. You could rewind back in 1989 and fast forward 2001
in the space of a few minutes.
The tales are a
mixture of childhood stories, marriage, war, lost love, death and everything.
While entertaining the stories educate the reader on culture, nature, politics,
history and even immigration. Accounts of the authors provide explanation of their journey into the area; and place a human face on the promoted view
of immigrants as being merely statistics flooding in plaguing the state and
straining resources.
After reading 'meeting the
family' I promise that you will want to personally thank the Bolton
Multicultural Arts Scheme for producing this project, the community members for
sharing their inspirational and somewhat comical stories and finally my Aunt
for buying me this book. So if you want a bit of escapism from an extremely early, long, dull train journeys with no network or whatever the bane of your existence
is at the moment; treat yourself and pick it up on Amazon or only for £15 in Waterstones.
